The Food Route

The Food Route

Description of the project: The Food Route

Santa Comba is not a town traditionally dedicated to tourism, in fact its population lives on ranching mainly, and all the jobs derived from that, as well as the nightlife in several streets downtown. Industrial Tourism as a resource is ideal to value the area taking into account those alternatives which can be offered to visitors.

Our food route is a project of Industrial Tourism in Santa Comba.

We move national and international tourists closer to local population and natives, through their business initiatives, factories or cooperatives, by visiting their facilities and getting to know first-hand the manufacturing process of their products, while we talk directly with them, getting a unique tourist experience.

The economy of this area has always been linked to agriculture. In the 18th century, 90% of the neighbours were farmers, and great number of mule drivers who used to transport corn and wheat to Santiago and other places. Mule drivers also carried fish, coal, salt and other products from the coastline.

The characterization of a destination consists on the elaboration of a previous diagnosis of the territory, which helps to identify the industrial, heritage and cultural resources which can inspire to develop a tour with an industrial perspective.

Project funded by Santa Comba City Council.
Promoted by Ponle Cara al Turismo and Santa Comba City Council.
Technical assistance:  Ponle Cara al Turismo / Occidente.

Challenge:

This initiative aims at the self-management of the project and the reach of enough economic resources for the companies to continue working on their own, by increasing their sales, making their positioning better, and getting the loyalty of the clients who know the brand first-hand through the visits of Industrial Tourism.

The route allows you to visit a cattle farm, an antique bakery where bread continues being made in a traditional way, a cheese factory, crafters, painters, smiths, or a fizzy-drink factory where the secret of the bubles will be revealed. We will taste the flavour of Santa Comba through different wines in any of the several catering places and we will have a photo shoot in one of the most stunning waterfalls in Galicia.

Visitors will met not only manufacturing processes of engineering or architecture solutions, but also historical periods and the people who made and have made all these possible.
