The tinned-food sector route

The tinned-food sector route

Description of the project: The tinned-food sector route

This project is based in such an outstanding sector in the Galician Region as the tinned-food industry is.

This industry is made up of tens of companies, launching hundreds of high-quality products and employing thousands of workers in our region.

In order to offer a figure which may be illustrative enough, we will just remind that 50% of the tinned-food companies of Spain are based in Galicia, which employ 80% of the workers of the sector, being in several cases multi-national firms leading the sector in the world.

This route belongs to the so-called Industrial Tourism, being a true opportunity to develop a touristic activity in areas which are not traditionally linked to tourism, but at the same time, it serves as a way of offering a complimentary high-quality offer, and of removing the seasonal effects of the sector in those areas where tourism has already been consolidated.

This route belongs to a type of tourism based in experiences, which is also called Maritime Tourism. The activity is developed by professionals of the sea who receive a remuneration, and it is orientated to value and promote the activities and products of the marine environment, as well as their costumes, traditions, heritage and culture so it goes beyond the pure extractive or commercial activity.

Challenge:

Our Tinned-food route becomes a unique enriching experience from many different points of view as it allows travellers to visit a tinned-food factory and get to know the manufacturing process, to visit auxiliary companies as the shipyards, to get information kept by the different museums dedicated to the sea that we are lucky to have, to enjoy the great beauty of the scenery, the incredible facilities and the magical coastline, to find out about the stories of the pioneers, and their achievements and anecdotes, and also to taste and buy the top-quality products.

Our work:

Ponle Cara al Turismo developed the different phases of the project, including coordinating, management and commercialization of experiences.

Specifically we did the following:

  • Tour guides.
  • Booking management.
  • Search of resources.
  • Organization of the product.
  • Creation of itineraries and package tours.
  • Coordination of factories and fishing companies.
  • Training on Industrial Tourism for Tour Guides and companies.
  • Research of different channels of distribution: travel agencies, tour operators, both national and internationally.
